Winter Happenings

Perhaps it’s thought that farmers gaze off into the distance and drink tea in the winter, or head off to exotic beaches. Though Eric and Lori did have a week on the Pacific Coast, Danielle is going off to a yoga retreat, and Michael slipped off to New Mexico, we’ve mostly been hard at work here on the farm.

What have we been up to? Pruning the orchard, propagating figs, planting seeds, cleaning up the hoophouses, and tapping Maple and Black Walnut trees for sugaring this spring.

Our hope had been to have some pruning workshops and other special events in February, but the weather has been quite uncooperative. We don’t want to risk anyone’s safety on an icy, gravel lane.

Weather permitting we’ll be open weekends again beginning March 8 with sugaring demos.

Gallons and gallons of Maple, and Black Walnut sap will be cooking down to syrup out on our patio. Did you know it takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup? A bit more for Walnut.
Samples will be on hand because you really do need to try Black Walnut syrup! There just may be cider cocktails made with that delicious syrup. Think Manhattan!

Remember to mark you calendars for the last weekend in April.
