The story of Adam and Eve involved an apple, but it is highly probable that among the fruit in the Garden of Eden, there were figs. And if you’ve ever tasted a firm, juicy, entirely ripe fig, you can imagine that it was really the fig rather than the apple that may have caused the problems. It is one of the most incredible of all fruits. And while figs originated in the Tigris and Euphrates Valley, you can grow them right here in Maryland.

Please Join us for our second annual fig workshop on August 23rd from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Willow Oaks Craft Cider, Middletown, Maryland.

Learn how to grow, propagate, and prepare these wonderful fruits. Learn which varieties work best in what situations; how to protect them in winter; how to prune to fit the space you have available; and how to use them in feeding your family. Many of our more-than-a-dozen varieties will be ripe so you’ll have an opportunity to determine which ones you prefer.

Among the topics we will consider are planting, feeding and watering, pruning, winter protection, harvesting and storage, propagation, and use in the kitchen. We will spend time in our fig tunnel and tasting room as well as with the figs planted beside our buildings.

The cost is $75 which includes tasting figs, printed information on the topics we discuss including recipes, and a fig plant of your choice. If you do not care for another fig plant, or you are not yet ready to make the leap, you may apply $25 of the workshop fee toward other planting materials, fruit, or non-alcoholic value-added products that we grow. And if you prefer to defer taking the fig plant until next Spring, we will hold it carefully for you over winter in our fig hoop.
